Mauao (Mount Maunganui) Base Track
Mauao’s 3.1 km track around the base of the mountain is an easy walk for most levels of fitness.
Walk past ancient Maori middens and evidence of whare (house) sites previously sited on the lower slopes, past remote beaches with rocky cliffs, enjoy the view across the narrow channel to Matakana Island and experience the rawness of wide open ocean spreading out before you. There’s a good chance during summer that you’ll see seals, sometimes whales, shags, tui and other wildlife. From various points on the path you can watch tankers and cruise ships come in and out of the busy Port of Tauranga.
The popularity of the track is evident on any given day of the year, rain or shine, summer or winter with a staggering 700,000 people using the base track annually. No charge
Mauao Summit
The summit peaks at 232 metres above sea level and working farmland, so be aware of sheep and in July-September-their lambs. Keep to the tracks; the left track which is wide with loose gravel is gentle for some metres before the real climb begins, the right track takes you up steps for more than half the way to the summit. Once at the top the view of the entire region is breathtaking and worth it! Take some water! No charge
Blokart Heaven
Family bored on the weekends? Staff needs to bond a bit better? Shake off the malaise and go down to Blokart Heaven in Papamoa for some fun and excitement with the blokart landsailers. Whether for a 15-minute thrill or a full-day blast they cater for everyone – no matter what the age. And they’re open 7 days.
Papamoa Hills Regional Park
This park on the hills behind Papamoa is accessed via the Te Puke road (SH2) and take the Poplar Lane turnoff towards the quarry. The park has a unique mix of; ancient Maori pa sites which provided clear views of the terrain in Maori history and which (extraordinarily) you have access to, stands of native forest, on a working farm, and offers outstanding views over the Bay of Plenty coastline from its summit 224m above sea level. There are several tracks through the park which is open daily from 6.30am to 7pm in winter and until 9pm in summer. Put aside an hour- it is well worth it! Take some water! No charge
Waimarino Adventure Park
Waimarino is situated on the banks of the Wairoa River just 10 minutes from Tauranga city. This tranquil paradise is based around the sport of kayakingand over the past 30 years Waimarino has become Tauranga’s premier kayaking / canoe location.
Tauranga Art Gallery
The Tauranga Art Gallery is definitely worth a visit. Situated on the corner of Wharf and Willow Streets, in the heart of the CBD, the gallery delivers exhibitions of historical, modern and contemporary art developed in house by Gallery staff with touring exhibitions from other institutions and artist projects. No charge
A range of education and visitor programmes has been developed around the exhibitions to enhance visitor experiences which include debates, floor talks, guided tours, seminars, screenings, performances and artist residencies.
